'99 Conversion F.A.Q.

This Picture FAQ is to help answer the tons of questions we get about the '99 front end parts we offer on the Body page. The photos below offer four different views of all of the different styles that were available on the Stealth and 3000GT. The key comparison points are the headlights and their shape, and the mounting of the corner lights and how they fit into the bumper.

The Q & A of the F.A.Q.

Q: Are these stock parts?
A: Yes. These are all factory original Mitsubishi parts for the 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT.

Q: Will this work on my car?
A: Yes. Being that they are factory parts, they will work on all models and years of the Stealth and 3000GT. Different years obviously require different amounts of work to install.

Q: I have a 1991 - 1993 with the pop-up headlights, will this work on my car?
A: Yes, with a "but"... For starters, these years require a later style hood as the hoods are a different shape around the lights. The hoods mount the same, but fitment around the lights are different. Additionally, when you are installing the kit, you will have to trim the outer edge of the headlamp buckets in order for the larger projection beam housings to fit in properly. As an alternative, you can get the headlamp buckets from a 94+ and replace the ones in the car, but this requires tack-welding to remove the 91-93 buckets and weld in the 94+ style buckets. Also, on the 91-93 models there are no mount/screw holes along the inner edge of the headlamp buckets, so you will have to tap mount holes (unless you swap headlamp buckets entirely), and custom make a bracket for the inner front mount point. Look at the open hood pictures to compare mount points between the 91-93 and 94+.

Q: I have a Dodge Stealth, will this work on my car?
A: Yes. A number of Stealth owners have made the conversion, both 91-93 Stealths and 94-96. They have the same issues as the 3000GT as far as 91-93's.

Q: I have a 94-98 3000GT or Stealth, do I need a hood?
A: No. All of the 94-99 hoods are the same style and fit interchangeably.

Q: I have a 94-98 3000GT, will just the bumper work without swapping the lights?
A: Yes. But... On the 94-98 lights, they have a rounded shape on the lower outside corner and the 94-98 bumper lines follow that curve of the light. The 94-98 turn signal is a separate "pod" separate from the headlight. The 99 turn signal is a complete corner piece that mounts flush against the headlight. When you install the 99 turn signals against the 94-98 headlights, you get a small triangle gap between the front corner of the turn signal and the outer corner of the headlight. See pictures below in the converted vehicle sample section.

Q: I have a Stealth, will just the bumper work without swapping the lights?
A: Depends... The 94-96 Stealth headlights and corner lights are almost exactly the same (less the bubbled look). The corner lights are flush against the sides of the headlights, but the stealth corner lights are rounded on the lower outer corners, whereas the 99 corner lights make a corner. If you install the 99 bumper keeping the 94-96 Stealth stock lights, there will be a small gap (about 1 square/triangle inch) between the 99 bumper that is straight and the corner lights that curve up where they both meet the fender. See the side shots of the 94-96 Stealth and 99 3000GT above and note the lower corner of the corner lights where they meet the bumper and fender. So on the 94-96, you can change just the bumper and maintain the stock lights. On the 91-93 Stealth with the popup headlights, the corner lights are in the same configuration as the later Stealths, so it is feasible that just the bumper itself would work, but we have not had anyone attempt JUST the bumper and maintain the stock pop-up headlights. Will update if we learn otherwise. Update: There are now pictures at the bottom showing a 94 Stealth with just the bumper and corner lights, retaining the stock headlights.

Q: Will my current foglights work with the 99 front end?
A: No. For 91-93, they are very different and will not work. For the 94-98, you can move them and have them work, but it will require a little customizing for the mounting brackets - the 99's are further out toward the sides than earlier models. The factory 99 foglights are nearly $700 for the pair so we do not include or offer them. We recommend either moving your existing foglights or getting aftermarket foglights, which can be purchased in a variety of styles, some similar to stock, but all for a LOT less than stock ones.

Q: Will I have to remove my crash bar behind the bumper?
A: No. The 99 bumper cover clears the inner crash bar on earlier models. The center opening on the 99 bumper has a "panel" across the top 1/3 of the opening. This conceals the crash bar, and if you cut it out to maximize the opening (often done for front mount intercoolers) then the inner crash bar will be visible.

Q: What color can I get?
A: Red. Factory finished red is the only color available for the bumper and insert garnish fins. The hoods come in varying colors, but we can not order specific colors. So unless your car is red, figure prep and painting into your conversion budget.

Q: Does 3SX stock these parts?
A: No. While we stock most of our parts featured on our site, we have made arrangements with our local Mitsubishi dealership to have the parts ready for us. Though, as with any inventory, they are sometimes out of stock. Figure about a week for 3SX to get the parts in stock, properly packed, and arrange for a shipping pick-up.
