Tech - Turbo Clocking 101 Prepping 3SX TD05's for Installation

Turbo Clocking 101

We have put together a short how-to for "clocking" a turbo, which means rotating the compressor and exhaust housings in relation to the center cartridge holding the shaft and turbine wheels. Clocking a turbo is sometimes required due to the fact that many different cars run many different turbo and intercooler configurations, and these variations in configurations may require the turbo housings to be rotated to properly orient the turbo in relation to the manifold, intercooler piping, and direct the cartridge so oil flow is top to bottom.

This general walk-thru shows how to clock our TD05 16g turbo used in our TD05 kits. The process is applicable to most turbos, but you will need to determine exactly what angles the turbos need to be assembled in order to properly fit your specific application.

Installation of the EVOIII turbos that came with your 3SX TD05 turbo kit will require removing the internal wastegate actuators and clocking the turbos. The 3SX TD05 turbo kit utilizes external wastegates so the EVOIII internal wastegate actuators need to be removed and the wastegates need to be welded shut. The stock clocking/orientation of the EVOIII needs to be changed to allow proper positioning of oil feed/drain and intercooler piping.

Wastegate Removal

Remove two 13mm wasategate bolts.

Remove wastegate rod/flapper C clip.

After removing turbine housing from CHRA (center housing rotating assembly, or center cartridge) in step below, weld Flapper swing arm {first picture} and flapper {second picture} in closed position.

Clocking the Turbo

Remove V-Band clamp.

Separate turbine housing from compressor and CHRA.

Cut/grind off turbine housing locating pin.

Modified Housing.

Remove compressor housing snap ring.

Remove compressor housing from CHRA.

Drill out compressor housing locating pin.

Thoroughly clean parts of all debris before reassembly. Reassemble in reverse order clocking them in the position that best fits your setup. Some vehicles require the front turbo outlet to be clocked facing downward to utilize stock intercooler piping. Others may use an upward facing intercooler outlet setup.

Clock both turbos so that the CHRA oil feed is facing 12 o'clock and the return is facing 6 o'clock.

Install entire turbo kit loosely before tightening any bolts down.
